What is Might Could Studiomates?

A roadmap, toolkit, and community of artists supporting each other on our artistic journeys.

I believe embarking on the journey to become an artist is the most rewarding thing a person can do. But it’s not easy. We can go $100,000 in debt attending art school, or we can attempt to cobble together our own art education and travel solo as a self-taught artist.

I’m here to help you rethink the journey of making art, and what it means to make art and be an artist.

Because everyone can be an artist, and I think the world would be a better place with more of them.

I believe the artistic journey can be broken down into 3 stages:

Develop a creative mindset
Discover your artistic style
Incubate your dream projects

We—me and your future studiomates—are all here to help you begin and progress through this artistic journey, all in a nurturing environment surrounded by a supportive creative community.

“I am and have always been an artist, thank you for helping me discover that. Thank you for helping me unleash my inner artist.

A Road Map for Artistic Growth

Transform from budding artist to working powerhouse.

Might Could Studiomates houses all my educational projects. It’s about taking you from the very beginning stages—”I can’t draw!”—through to get you to a point where you’re a confident, self-sufficient, productive artist. I’ll teach you not only how to draw, but more importantly, how to be an artist.

We’ll learn what makes good art, and how to transform our ideas into art. We’ll learn not only how to draw a strong composition, but also how to communicate meaningful ideas and explore new and interesting passions. We’ll hone our artistic techniques, while expanding our confidence and creative mindset to create art you’re proud to share.

Why Did Am I Building This?

I'm Not a Teacher. Christine Nishiyama, Might Could Studios

After four years of teaching 17 online art classes with 45,000 students from around the world, I’ve finally realized the glaring missing element from online art education. The studio.  And more specifically—the studiomates.

This space is for those who want to make, share, and grow our art together.

This is your studio. These are your studiomates.

Might Could Studiomates is the culmination of a lot of different projects.

I’m using this community as an experiment to collaborate with you (the readers and makers!) on my entire book making process for this book and future books.

The internet has allowed for more collaboration and connection between makers and users than ever before. We can now get instant feedback on our projects, and use that feedback to make more informed decisions, pivot when necessary, and create the strongest project possible—as proven with this book, We Are Fungi.

I’ve been drawing for over 20 years, working independently for 5 years, making books for 3 years, and now I’m finally putting my books out into the wild. My core beliefs are that art is good, books are good, sharing is good, and we should all make more books together. I want to encourage you to make your book, and help you get it out of your head and into the world. Let’s do this!

What People Are Saying

There is no book quite like yours. Yours has a different mood than most educational children’s books. I love that your book is more mature and the colors make it an excellent bedtime story or book to read on a camping trip. The mood you created for your book is completely original.

“The illustrations are amazing and really got the students interested in fungi! They wanted to check out all the books our library had about fungi! You created fungi fans!”

“Your story-driven concept is more compelling to me than a nonfiction or science-based book would be… your story version raised my interest in the subject rather than listing facts alone. I would not have become interested in fungi without the story.”
